PDCC Partnering with Junior Achievement

Posted in Articles

The Parksville & District Chamber of Commerce is pleased to be working in partnership with Junior Achievement.

Junior Achievement (JA) is the world’s largest not-for-profit organization dedicated to educating youth about business and leadership. Junior Achievement has been active on Vancouver Island for nearly 15 years and each year provides programming to more than 6,000 school-aged youth in the region.

Junior Achievement partners with educators and business professionals to bring a real world experience into the classroom.  JA programs give students the confidence and skills they need to become the next generation of business and community leaders. All programs are facilitated by volunteers from the local business community and are provided at no cost to the schools and students.

Junior Achievement is seeking support from Chamber members to assist with upcoming programs at Springwood Middle School and Ballenas Secondary School. During school hours, visit a classroom and lead students through Junior Achievement curriculum while sharing your own real-world stories and experiences to help inspire our local youth to succeed.

Come on your own or bring a colleague to help. Volunteers are required immediately for the following programs:

Business Basics: Our Business World – Grade 5/6 students make BIG decisions while planning a small business. Students learn the basics of business including how businesses are organized and managed, plus they’ll learn about production and marketing.

Business Basics: A Business of Our Own – Grade 6/7 students organize and operate their own retail stand and assess their business performance. By taking on leadership roles within a management team, students discover the importance of individual performance and the value of teamwork.

Economics for Success – Grade 9/10 students reflect on the advantages of remaining in school to acquire the knowledge, attitudes and skills needed for long-term career success. Help students explore and manage their job and career choices by focusing on the links between further education and personal goals.

Junior Achievement will provide the training, materials and support to make your volunteer experience fun, meaningful and easy to deliver. Dedicate just a small amount of time and make a BIG impact by motivating local youth:

  • Get students excited about careers in your business or industry
  • Motivate students with your expertise and knowledge
  • Exercise your presentation, coaching and team-building skills
  • Support the future of our local community
