About
Horne Lake Caves Provincial Park is one of the few places in Canada where visitors can explore genuine wild limestone caves, and it is the highlight caving experience on Vancouver Island. The park protects a network of caves formed in ancient marble/limestone, decorated with calcite formations, flowstone, and fossils. Two caves — the Main Cave and Lower Main Cave — are open for free self-guided exploration by those who come prepared with a helmet and headlamp, while the more spectacular formations are protected behind gated caves accessible only on guided tours.
The guided tours, run by the on-site Horne Lake Cave & Outdoor Centre with certified guides and all caving gear included, range from family-friendly to adventurous. The Riverbend Cave Explorer (suitable for ages five and up) includes a short nature hike and a walk through the spacious, beautifully decorated upper Riverbend Cave with no tight squeezes or vertical climbing. More adventurous options include the multi-cave experiences, a cave rappel adventure, and the challenging Max Depth Adventure.
The park is a rugged mountain setting near Horne Lake, so plan for cave conditions: temperatures underground stay cool year-round, so wear warm layers, sturdy closed-toe footwear, and clothes you don't mind getting dirty. Tours fill quickly in summer, so reserve up to about three weeks ahead in peak season. Access is via a gravel road off the highway, so allow extra driving time, and arrive early to check in before your scheduled tour.
