About
The Top Bridge Regional Trail is a scenic multi-use pathway that links the ocean at Rathtrevor Beach with the wooded canyon of the Englishman River. Inaugurated in 1999, the roughly 4 km (each-way) trail offers a rustic ramble or bike ride from the seaside into cool riverside woodlands, and it is recognized as a notable feature of the Mount Arrowsmith Biosphere Region. Its centrepiece is the Top Bridge Crossing — a striking 81-metre pedestrian and cyclist suspension bridge (built in 2007) that spans the Englishman River and knits together the surrounding parks and conservation lands.
The area is a hub of outdoor activity: hiking, trail running, mountain biking, picnicking, and — in the warm months — swimming and cliff-side river pools that are hugely popular with locals on hot days. The river canyon is also a good spot for salmon viewing in season. From the suspension bridge, the trail network connects to the City of Parksville's Top Bridge Park and the RDN's Englishman River Regional Park, allowing longer loops and explorations.
Practical tips: the trail is rough-and-ready, so wear good footwear and expect uneven terrain; basic toilet facilities are available at trailheads; watch children carefully near the river, canyon edges, and any cliff-jumping spots, as currents and rocks can be dangerous; and be mindful of the seasonal gate hours so your vehicle isn't locked in overnight.
